Fortune has released their list of the 500 biggest companies in the world. At the top of the list is Wal Mart, which everyone loathes, but where everyone shops. The rest of the top twenty consisted almost exclusively of oil companies (3 out of the top 5), car companies, and banks. This list could be useful if you are looking for work, especially because you can search it for based on various criteria (big employer vs. small employer).
I would recommend a thorough search of the list, however, and if you find anyone that is employing people near you, go for it. This applies not only to the corporate or executive structure of these companies. If you’re looking for a second job, a gas station, or a Wal Mart, or a McDonald’s would provide excellent job security. And it’s pretty easy to slip into a middle management position. The point is to not allow your pride to keep you from working in a spectacularly bad job market.
