In another statement about the weakness in the labor market, initial unemployment claims rose last month (the number of new admitants to the program). Additionally, continuing unemployment claims rose. Obviously, the labor market is still pretty tough right now, “recovery” or no. In a bright spot, however, two of the country’s most unemployed states, California and Michigan, saw drops in the number of their claims. Whether this is because unemployment is running out or because their economies are starting to recover (Michigan might be benefiting greatly from Cash for Clunkers) is still difficult to tell.
